Description
Victorian Cast Iron Doorknob Thumb Turn Escutcheon by Lockwood Bordeaux
E-13300 C:1897 (missing thumb turn). The last photo shows the original finish
or rather how I received it. There is some corrosion of the surface to be noted
but it was void of any rust (or any other finish like a brass plating) so I
cannot say what the original finish was. It does appear, especially due to the
lack of rust, that the original finish may have been Bower-Barff, a finish
involves subjecting the iron to extremely high heat until it glows red and then
injecting water vapor and hydrocarbon chemicals into the steam which bonds with
and forms a blackish gray coating to the metal that is rust resistant. The
process goes back until at least 1889. Interesting stuff if you want Google it.
I repainted with a finish as close as possible to resemble how I got it. Feel
free to paint it to match your decor.
Always refer to the pictures they are an integral part of the description and
best represent the product. If you need more pictures or a further definition
please email me BEFORE you purchase.
Please remember that these are old pieces, many coming from homes 100+ years
old so they will NEVER EVER be perfect and will always show some evidence of
natural wear.
